6.3 multiplying a vector by a scalar Flashcards
What makes vectors colinear?
Two vectors parallel to one another or they lie on the same straight line
Rules for multiplying a vector by a number greater than zero (positive)
Answer would be in the same direction as the vector
Would be longer than the vector
If between 0 and 1 the length would be around half the size of the vector
Rules for multiplying a vector by a number less than zero (negative)
Answer would be in opposite direction of the vector
If value is between 0 and -1 the scale multiple will be shorter than the vector
What happens if you multiply a vector by 0?
Your will obtain the zero vector
What happens if you multiply a vector by -1?
The vector will simply change direction and the magnitude will stay the same
What is a unit vector?
A vector with a magnitude of 1
How to determine the unit vector
Find the magnitude using the cosine law
1/magnitude time the original or resultant I’m
How to say E25degreeN
Direction 25 degrees north of due east
What are noncolinear vectors?
Two vectors that are not parallel
What happens if you subtract the opposite of a vector?
You obtain vector 0
