6.3: group 0 Flashcards
what does โchemically inertโ mean
term used to describe a substance that is not chemically reactive
what is group 0
noble gases
how many electrons do noble gases have in their outer shell
noble gases have 8 electrons in their outer shell
why are noble gases chemically inert
their full outer shells make them unreactive as they are very stable
how is the low density of noble gases practical
the low density means it is much less dense than air so it is used in balloons and airships (helium)
how is the non-flammability of noble gases useful
these are used inside light bulbs to stop the filament from burning away
how is the inertness of noble gases useful
argon can be used as a sheild gas during welding, and as it is also denser than air, it keeps it away from the metal
what are the physical properties of noble gases
