6.1: group 1 Flashcards
what are groups in a periodic table
they are the columns within the periodic table
what information does the group number tell us
the amount of electrons in the outer shell
what are the properties of alkali metals
soft with relatively low melting points
what are the products of lithium, sodium and potassium reacting with water
they react vigorously to have products of an alkaline metal hydroxide and hydrogen
how does lithium react with water
fizzes steadily
how does sodium react with water?
melts into a ball and then fizzes quickly
how does potassium react with water?
gives off sparks and hydrogen burns with a lilac flame
what is order of reactivity in group one
least reactive at the top with most reactive at the bottom
why is does the reactivity vary like this?
