6.3 Endocrine system Flashcards
What do endocrine glands do?
produce and secrete hormones
What are hormones?
chemical messengers
What part does the blood stream play in the endocrine system?
circulates hormones around the body
What do hormones do?
bind to specific receptor molecules on the surface of target cells stimulating a response
How are hormones self regulated?
negative feedback via homeostasis
What is the pituitary gland?
the master gland releasing hormones which control other endocrine glands
What does the anterior pituitary release in response to stress?
ACTH
Where are the adrenal glands in the body?
On top of the kidneys
What hormone does the adrenal cortex release?
cortisol
What hormones do the adrenal medulla release?
Adrenaline and noradrenaline
What does cortisol do?
released in response to stress
regulates cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory functions
What does adrenaline do?
helps body respond to acute stress by increasing heart rate and blood flow
increases glucose production
What does noradrenaline do?
rises blood pressure
