6.2a Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development Flashcards
Jean Piaget
Believed cognitive development is not one continuous progression of change. Children make leaps in cognitive abilities from one stage of development to the next. believed that cognitive development is a combination of nature and nurture
Cognition
refers to the mental activities that help us function
schema
mental container we build to hold our experiences (images, models, and/or concepts)
assimilate
incorporating new experiences into our existing schema or categories
accommodate
adjusting our schema to better fit our experiences.
Egocentrism
(Preoperational Stage) not about selfishness, but about being unable to see another person’s perspective “I am the World”
Theory of Mind
refers to the ability to understand that others have their own thoughts and perspective (maturation of egocentrism)
Sensorimotor Stage (Birth to nearly 2)
Experiencing the world through senses and actions (looking, touching, mouthing, and grasping)
Development: Object Permeance- (the idea that objects exist even when they can’t be seen) and Stranger Anxiety
Preoperational (2 to about 6 or 7 years)
Representing things with words and images; is more intuitive than logical reasoning since they are too young to perform mental operations.
Development: Pretend Play, Egocentrism, Language
Concrete Operational (About 7 to 11 years)
Thinking logically about concrete events; grasping concrete analogies and performing arithmetical operations
Development: Conservation, Mathematical Transformations
Formal Operational (About 12 to Adulthood)
Abstract Reasoning, Concrete operations like arithmetic, and Formal Operations includes allegorical
Developmental: Abstract Logic, Potential for mature, moral reasoning
