6.2 - Non ferrous Flashcards
What is the definition of a non ferrous metal?
A metal with no iron in it
Properties of titanium
- High strength
- light weight
- temp resistance
- corrosion resistance
What preparations must be made before machining titanium?
- ensure tooling is sharp and clean
- fire extinguishing equipment available
- liquid coolant used during grinding
Properties of pure aluminium
- high corrosion resistance
- malleable
- light weight
- too soft for aircraft construction
- cast or wrought form
Main property of cast aluminium
Coats structure making it brittle
What is the system called to designate aluminium alloys.
AA number
Aluminium Association of America
Describe the AA numbering system?
1 digit - main alloy ingredient
2 digit - alloy modification
3/4- identifies different alloys in the group
What does the prefix T3 indicate?
Solution heat treatment
What is cladding?
A thin layer of pure aluminium to protect certain alloys from corrosion
What is work hardening?
Strengthening of a metal by plastic deformation
What is annealing?
Continuous heating of a metal, follow by slow cooling. Increases the effectivity of cold working.
What is solution heat treating?
Metal is heated in molten sodium / potassium nitrate or in a hot air furnace. After heating the metal is quenched within 10 seconds of removal from that heat.
Any longer than 10 seconds you could introduce inter granular corrosion
How many times can a clad material be heat treated?
3, can cause corrosion if any more
What are the basic temper designations?
F: as fabricated
O: Annealed
H: strain hardened
W: solution heat treated.
3 disadvantages of magnesium on aircraft?
- Corrode easily
- Difficult to work with
- Highly flammable
