6.11 Flashcards
List the desirable/required features of a wire to be used on aircraft (electrics)
Minimum weight + dimensions
Resistance to fluids
Non-flammable
Wide range of operating temperatures
Resistant to abrasion
Wet arc tracking
Application
Rating
What does AWG stand for?
American wire gauge.
What does the following define…?
Isolated single solid conductor or stranded conductor, surrounded by insulation.
A wire
What is nyvin
A type of cable not used since 1990 due to weight
What superseded nyvin and why was it a better cable
Thin walled cables.
Lighter and better performance.
What are aluminium wires used for (electricity)
Large loads
Why are copper wires used
For maximum wire flexibility.
Qualities of good Wire insulation
Resistant up to 600 v
Highly flexible
Lightweight
Resistant against aircraft fluids.
Temp. ranges for wires (electrics)
Normal = 100/150
High temp = 260 degrees
Fire resistant = 1093 degrees for 15 mins
Shielded cables
Prevents electromagnetic interference with things like : antennas, receivers or transmitters.
Called coaxial cables.
Wire substitutions
All wire substitutions to be made in accordance with electrical manuals
Wire sizing
Uses AWG system
0 is the largest sized wire
Bigger the number, smaller the wire.
24 is the smallest used on aircraft and has a diameter of 0.5mm
Direct and indirect methods of marking wire
Direct - printed on the cables covering
Indirect - heat shrikable sleeve
Thermocouples
Utilise the thermo-electric effect.
Iron + constantan in light aircraft w/ reciprocating engines
Chrome and allumer are used also
Copper+ constantan used in older aircraft
What determiners a successful crimp?
Conductor
Crimp barrel
Crimp tool
