6.1 Nervous & Musculoskeletal Flashcards
What types of muscles are in the body?
1] voluntary
2] involuntary
What are the different types of muscle tissue?
1] skeletal muscle tissue
2] smooth muscle tissue
3] cardiac muscle tissue
How do skeletal muscles work?
Teamwork! They work in pairs. When one muscle of a pair contracts (tightens), the other relaxes.
What does the skeleton do?
1] gives shape & support to the body
2] protects internal organs
3] works with major muscles to make body parts move
4] produces red blood cells & stores minerals like calcium and phosphorous until your body needs them
What are the characteristics of bones?
Red marrow
Red marrow is located in spongy bone. It produces red blood cells. Blood cells are produced at a rate of about 2 to 3 million cells per second!
Spongy bone
Spongy bone is located at the ends of long bones, like those in your thigh and upper arm. These bones have small, open spaces that make the bones lightweight.
Nerve and Blood vessels
Nerves and blood vessels enter and leave through holes in bones.
Compact bone
Compact bones make bones strong. They have a framework made of calcium and phosphate deposits that make bone hard.
Cartilage
Cartilage is a smooth, flexible, and slippery layer of tissue that covers the ends of bones. It reduces the friction that would be caused by bones rubbing together.
Periosteum
Periosteum is the tough, tight-fitting membrane that covers the bone’s surface.
Yellow marrow
Yellow marrow is made up of fat cells.
What role do joints play?
Allot a human to move easily.
_________ muscles can also get larger or smaller over time, depending on how they are used. This is why regular exercise is important in maintaining strong and flexible muscles.
Skeletal
About how many bones in the human skeleton?
About 206
What is the center of the skeleton?
backbone
it’s make of 26 small bones called vertbrae
Brain
control center for all activities in the body; made of billions of neurons
Cardiac muscles
involuntary muscle tissue found only in the heart
Central nervous system
the brain and spinal cord, which control the activities of the body
Involuntary muscles
muscles that cannot be controlled consciously
Joint
place where two bones come together
Ligament
strong connective tissue that holds together the bones at a joint
