6.1 Further Mechanics Flashcards
Radian
The angle formed at the centre of the circle by an arc equal in length to the radius of the circle.
Angular velocity
The rate of change on angular displacement with respect to time
Centripetal Acceleration
The acceleration of an object towards the centre of a circle when an object is rotating around a circle at constant speed.
Centripetal Force
The resultant force towards the centre of the circle required to keep a body in uniform circular motion.
Law of conservation of energy
The total energy in a simple harmonic system Always remain constant and is equal to the sum of kinetic and potential energies.
Damping
The reduction of energy and amplitude of oscillations due to the resistive forces acting on the system.
Light Damping
When oscillation decreases exponentially by gradually decreasing the amplitude
Critical Damping
Oscillator returns to equilibrium in the shortest extra time without oscillating.
Heavy Damping
When a heavily damped oscillator is displaced from the equilibrium, it will take a long time to return to its equilibrium position without oscillating
Free Oscillation
An oscillation where there are only internal forces (and no external forces) acting and there is no energy input
Forced Oscillation
Oscillations acted on by a periodic external force where energy is given in order to sustain oscillations
Resonance
When the frequency of the applied force to an oscillating system is equal to its natural frequency, the amplitude of the resulting oscillations increases significantly
