6.1 and 6.2 Genetics Flashcards
Structure and History
What is a Gene?
a gene carries the information that determines your traits ( Ex. Eye Colour)
How is DNA packaged in Eukaryote cells?
DNA is wrapped around proteins known as histones to form structures called nucleosomes.
What is a Histone?
Eight histone proteins can come together to make up something called a nucleosome
What is a Nucleosome?
A single nucleosome consists of about 150 base pairs of DNA sequence wrapped around a core of histone proteins
How are Prokaryotes packaged?
DNA is packaged in simple loop-shaped chromosomes called plasmids.
What is a Genome?
A genome is the complete set of genetic information of an organism. It contains all the instructions for creating and maintaining life
Which Scientist first “discovered” DNA
Meischer:
-he studied the composition of the
nucleus
- Collected pus from
bandages (mostly
WBC’s)
Extracted an
unknown substance
that was acidic and
contained phosphorus (DNA)
-Called it named
Which Scientists Studied how bacteria can change?
Griffith
- he studied pneumonia bacteria
- studied the S
