6.1 Flashcards
Capacitor
Circuit component that stores energy by separating charges onto two electrical conductors with an insulator between them. One plate becomes positively changed and the other negatively charged
Capacitance
The charge per unit potential difference stored across the the plates of the capacitor
Exponential decay
A decrease at a rate proportional to the magnitude of the quantity at that time ????
Time constant
Time taken for the charge remaining on a capacitor to decrease to 1/e or 37% of its initial value
structure of a capacitor
2 parallel conducting plates separated by an insulator (dielectric).
how a capacitor becomes charged
the electrons from one side flow through the circuit to the other side of the capacitor making that plate negatively charged and the opposing one positively charged due to the lack of negative charge
capacitors in parallel
Ctot = C1+C2+C3…….
capacitors in series
1/Ctot= 1/C1+1/C2……..
charging current
decreases exponentially
charging pd
increases then levels off
charging charge on a capacitor
charge increases then levels off
discharge current
decreases exponentially
discharge charge on capacitor
decreases exponentially
discharging pd
decreases exponentially
