60 Glossary Flashcards
glossary
cranial nerve responsible for sense of vision
Cranial II Optic
displaying lack of muscle tone; limp, floppy
flaccidity
Cranial nerve responsible for muscles of the face and sense of taste in the anterior two thirds of the tongue
cranial VII Facial
an automatic response to stimuli
reflex
a reflex action of the toes. Normal in pedia, abnormal in adult
babinski reflex
cranial nerve responsible for pharyngeal movement and swallowing, sense of taste in the posterior one third of the tongue
cranial IX glossopharyngeal
Cranial nerve responsible for sense of smell
Cranial I Olfactory
cranial nerve responsible for movement of shoulder muscles
cranial XI accessory
Loss of ability to recognize objects through a particular sensory system
Agnosia
an acute, confused state that begins with disorientation and if not recognized and treated early can progress to changes in level of consciousness, irreversible brain damage and sometimes death
delirium
cranial nerve responsible for sense of hearing
cranial VIII acoustic
cranial nerve responsible for jaw movements-chewing and mastication and sensation on the face and neck
Cranial V Trigeminal
illusion of movement in which the individual or the surroundings are sensed as moving
vertigo
division of the nervous system that regulates the involuntary body functions
autonomic nervous system
sustained increase in tension of a muscle when it is passively lengthened or stretched
spasticity
cranial nerve responsible for movement of the tongue and strength of the tongue
cranial XII hypoglossal
awareness of position of parts of the body without looking at them
position (postural) sense
increase in muscle tone at rest characterized by increased resistance to passive stretch
rigidity
cranial nerve responsible for lateral movement of the eyes
Cranial VI Abducens
division of the autonomic nervous system active primarily during nonstressful conditions, controlling mostly visceral functions
parasympathetic nervous system
Inability to coordinate muscle movement (walking, talking)
ataxia
test for cerebellar dysfunction that can be done with the patient seated or standing; inability to maintain position for 20 seconds is a positive test
romberg test
Portion of the neuron that conducts impulses away from the cell body
axon
cranial nerve responsible for downward and inward eye movement
Cranial nerve IV trochlear
cranial nerve responsible for swallowing and speaking
cranial X vagus
division of the autonomic nervous system with predominantly excitatory responses (synonym: fight or flight system)
sympathetic nervous system
portion of the neuron that conducts impulses toward the cell body
dendrite
Abnormal movement marked by alternating contraction and relaxation of a muscle occurring in rapid succession
clonus
cranial nerve responsible for pupil constriction, test pupillary reaction to light and ability. To open and close eyelids
Cranial III Oculomotor
