Q

What are some criticisms of the ‘digital native’ thesis?

A
  • It does not consider the fact that young people still engage in traditional media activities
  • It ignores the banality of much media use. Most interaction on the internet by the young relates to the consumption of music and films, or social networking.

Q

Who is not a part of the digital revolution? What is the term we use to describe this phenomenon?

A

This is known as the “digital divide” which is defined as the unequal access and utility of internet communications technologies.

Not only is it a matter of class – whereby one must be able to afford these technologies and stay up to date with the latest iteration of their ever-evolving instruments – it is a large-scale phenomenon occurring worldwide, both within certain countries and in relation to others, as well.
