6. Using Data Types & Units Flashcards
What do Hertz (Hz) measure?
i.e Megahertz (MHz) & Gigahertz (GHz).
MHz = 1,000,000 cycles per second
GHz= 1,000,000,000 cycles per second
Computer’s internal clock speed
The speed at which the processors work
Meaning of ASCII?
American Standard Code for Information Interchange
2 types of character encodings?
- ASCII
- Unicode
How many bits are used to represent characters in ASCII?
7 bits
7 bits were used rather than 8 because it lowered the cost at the time (1963)
What is a more modern solution to ASCII?
Unicode
There are different Unicode character encoding standards, including UTF-8, UTF-16, and UTF-32. UTF-8 is used by many websites.
What is a security control?
Mechanism designed to unauthorized data access & tampering
There are many types of security controls, and they can be classed in different ways
How to decide whether to invest in security control?
By calculating ROSI
Meaningo of ROSI?
Return On Security Investment
How to calculate ROSI?
Assess risks to determine potential data loss costs & likelihood
What is data exfiltration?
Unauthorized removal of data from a network
What is a data breach?
When a network exposes private data publicly
3 types of Intellectual Property (IP)?
- Trademark
- Copyright
- Patents
What does Copyright do?
Grants control over a work’s use to the holder
Including publishing, distributing, & selling
The creation of the work ensures copyright protection automatically.
What do Trademarks do?
Protects, symbols, names, or designs that distinguish goods & services
if a company wants to promote its goods it will normally trademark its name and/or logo
What is a patent?
Legal protection for some kind of invention
How does a patent differ from Copyright?
By also applying to ideas
As long as the idea is original, useful, & distinctive or non-trivial.
You dont need to have a copy of the invention or put it into practice. Patents are registered for a limited time only
What is a patent infringement?
Unauthorized use of an invention
3 types of data-drive business decisions?
- Data collection
- Data correlation
- Meaningful reporting
Data correlation means analyzing the whole data set and finding connections and links between data points
i.e. Software may correlate page visitors with color schemes, noting that pages mostly blue attract more visitors than those with more yellow.
What aspect of data analytics benefits most from impactful reporting?
