The total score may be useful for

predicting the clinical outcome of critically ill pts.

Studies have shown that mortality rates are associated with the SOFA score: the mortality rate is 50% if the score increases in the first 96 hours after admission; the mortality rate is 25% if the score remains the same in the first 96 hours after admission; and the mortality rate is less than 25% if the score decreases in the first 96 hours after admission.
