5. Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS) Flashcards
Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is sometimes referred to as
multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. MODS is the progressive insufficiency of 2 or more organs in an acutely ill pt, such that homeostasis cannot be maintained w/out intervention (Table 5-6)
CV Markers of MODS
-Hypotension
-Tachycardia
-Dysrhythmias
-Need for vasopressor support
-Decreased systemic vascular resistance
-Abnormal CVP (low or high)
-Positive Troponin
Pulmonary Markers of MODS
-Tachypnea
-Dyspnea
-Hypoxemia
Neurological Markers of MODS
-Confusion
-Delirium
-Disorientation
-Lethargy, coma
-Seizure
Renal Markers of MODS
-Elevated creatinine
-Decreased GFR
-Oliguria
-Life-threatening electrolyte imbalances
Hepatic Markers of MODS
-Elevated liver enzymes
-Hypoglycemia
-decreased albumin
-jaundice
Hematologic Markers of MODS
-Thrombocytopenia
-coagulopathy
-increased D-dimer levels
-decreased protein C levels
Endocrine Markers of MODS
-hyperglycemia or
-hypoglycemia
-adrenal insufficiency
Metabolic Markers of MODS
-Metabolic acidosis
-Elevated lactate
MODS may be the result of
any type of shock
-the greater the number of organs involved, the
higher the mortality.
-Accounts for ~ 80% of all ICU deaths annually
