What was the sealed knot?
A secret society of aristocrats established by Charles to nurture royalist resistance
Charles tried to kill Cromwell….
Charles offered £550 a year and a knighthood to anyone who would kill Cromwell
Ambushes against Cromwell
Had planned a number of ambushes against Cromwell, e.g. 13th May 1654, and several weeks later planning to kill him whilst he prayed at a chapel. Each time they failed. They were weak and divided
What was Charles planning by late 1654?
Had discovered an under ground group called the Action Party
He encouraged a truce between the two groups, but the plans took a serious knock when Thurloe’s men infiltrated the group
What was Charles planning by 1655?
Had a date set for 8th march, but everything went wrong, such as arrears and strong opposition defences, as well as the fact that the men were weak and divided
Levellers
After this, they were joined by two leading levellers, Sindercombe and Sexby, who hatched a further 6 assassination plans, all of which failed
