6- Restraint, sedation and anaesthesia Flashcards
What are x-rays
high frequency, short wavelength electromagnetic waves
Downside of x-rays
Ionising radiation - affects any atoms including DNA
Very penetrating - can pass through substances
What does ALARP stand for? & how is it achieved?
As Low As Reasonably Practicable
Working practices
Amount of radiation
Distance
Shielding
What is the inverse square law?
The intensity of radiation is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source of radiation
‘Double the distance, quarter the exposure’
What material is used for shielding against radiographs?
Lead- it is very dense
T/F You (vet) can be in the room whilst CT scan’s are taken
False - lots of radiation so nobody in controlled area
List some was to alter working practices for ARLAP
use sedation/ GA to minimise handling
have controlled area with signage
