What is PID?
A
Inflammation of the uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries

What are the most common causes of PID?
A
Infections - chlamydia, gonorrhoea, BV, caused by IUD or uterine interventions

How does PID present?
A
Lower abdominal pain Dyspareunia Discharge AUB (PCB/IMB) \+/- fever

How is PID investigated?
A
Bimanual vaginal examination
Speculum - discharge, cervix

What are some differential diagnoses for symptoms presented in PID?
A
Appendicitis UTI Ectopic pregnancy Endometriosis Ovarian cysts

What complications can there be in PID?
A
Chronic pelvic pain Abscess (tubo-ovarian) Subfertility Increased risk of ectopic pregnancy Peritonitis Fitz-Hugh Curtis syndrome (peri-hepatitis)

What is the management for PID?
A
Antibiotics (don’t wait fo swabs) - broad spectrum +/- IV abx
Analgesia
Contact screening (GUM)
Laparoscopy - if patients fail to respond to treatment
