1. Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Where does spermatogensis occur?
Seminiferous tubules in testes
Where do the seminiferous tubules drain into?
Though rete testis, then efferent ductile the then head of epididymis
What is the testes surrounded by?
Tunica albuginea (capsule) Then serous membrane (tunica vaginalis)
What is hydrocoele?
Cavity of tunica vaginalis fills with fluid
What are Sertoli cells?
Important in supporting the developing sperm
Where are Sertoli cells found?
In the seminiferous tubules
Where are leydig cells found?
In interstitial connective tissue between seminiferous tubules
What is the function leydig cells?
Important for making testosterone
Where do the testicular arteries come from?
Abdominal aorta just below the kidneys
Where does the left testicular vein drain into?
Left renal vein
What is the pampiniform plexus?
Testicular artery is wrapped in testicular vein to help cool down the arterial blood
What is the venous drainage of the right testis?
Right testicular vein into IVC
What is the lymphatic drainage of the right testis?
Right lumbar and preaortic lymph nodes at L2
What is the lymphatic drainage of the left testis?
Left lumbar and preaortic lymph nodes at L2
What is the lymphatic drainage of the scrotum?
Inguinal lymph nodes
What is the lymphatic drainage of the prostate gland?
Obturator and internal iliac lymphatic channels
What is the venous drainage of the scrotum?
Anterior - great saphenous vein
Posterior - internal iliac vein
What is the gubernaculum?
Structure that is attached to bottom of scrotum and lower pole of testis
Guides testis down through abdominal wall muscles
What is the ejaculatory duct?
Combination of vas deferens and seminal vesicle
What is the structure of the penis?
2 corpus caviosum
Corpus spongiosum which contains the urethra
How does an erection happen?
Vasodilation in penile arterioles, and compression of veins results in erection
Vasodilation is initiated by parasympathetic stimulation
Erection is terminated by vasoconstriction
Where is the corpus cavernosum attached to?
Pubic symphysis
What surrounds the corpus cavernosum?
Tunica albuginea - collagen fibres running in transverse and longitudinal planes
Where does the penis blood supply come from?
Internal iliac artery which then forms the internal pudendal artery
