6] Operant Conditioning (2) Flashcards
What is stimulus control
When behaviour occurs at a higher rate in the presence of a stimulus rather than the absence
What is discrimination learning
Learning to respond when reinforcement is available and not respond when unavailable
What is a motivating operation
When a person wants a stimulus it allows it to work as a reinforcer
What is an establishing operation
An MO that increase the current effectiveness of a reinforcer
E.g: Hunger makes food an effective reinforcer
What is an abolishing operation
An MO that decreases the current effectiveness of a reinforcer
E.g: Eating- food is a less effective reinforcer
What is shaping
During learning an organism can emit a response it was unable to before learning, it is a procedure for generating new responses
What is differential reinforcement
The procedure where reinforcement is provided for responses that share quality and is withheld when it does not have that quality
Differential reinforcement reinforces dimensions in..
1] Topography
2] Frequency
3] Latency
4] Duration
5] Amplitude/Magnitude of a behaviour
Advantages of shaping
1] Teaches new behaviour
2] Reinforcement based approach
3] Can be combined with behavioural change procedures
Disadvantages of reinforcement
1] Time consuming
2] Progress isn’t linear
3] Requires skilled practitioner
4] Can be misapplied
5] Any behaviour can be shaped
