Q

About and Wallace: the family and the New Right

A

Looked at the UK and USA in the 1980s
- the New Right are pro family, anti-abortion, pro-life, and anti feminist
- New Right promotes the idea that ‘Families need fathers; as they feel that the nuclear family is under threat from social change and government policy, and this could lead to a less stable society

  • NR argues that modern day family can’t carry out their roles effectively e.g. working mothers failing to put their children first which has led to divorce and single parent families
  • single parent families cause problems in society e.g. crime and delinquency
  • NR attack the welfare system as this one encourages single parent families to form

A

(+) nuclear family was strengthened when Margaret Thatcher was in rule, and froze child benefits

(-) NR contradicted by marxists as they argue females shouldn’t aim to stay at home, but should aim to be a reserve army of labour

Q

The New Right and Family - government policies and stats

A

1979 the Conservative government implemented many policies and focused on welfare state:

1) many psychiatric and geriatric hospitals closed down

2) Equal Opportunity Commission found 3 times as many women than men looking after elderly relatives, many women found it difficult to cope

3) Bernard: ‘marriage makes women sick’ where women have more rates of illness than men. Married women have the worst heath compared to married men and single women, this is because the double stress of caring for children and the household as well as caring for sick and elderly relatives too

Q

The New Right and family life by Redwood

A
  • he supported the idea of nuclear family
  • social changes have threatened traditional norms and values of family life e.g. homosexuality, cohabitation, unmarried mothers, high divorce rates, increase in single parent family
  • decline in marriage rates has led to a weakening of traditional family roles

E.g. 1.9 single parent families exist in the UK in 2013 (this has grown from 1.8 million in 2003)

NR argue we need to return to traditional family in order to remedy this situation

NR theory by Murray and Hernstein

A

Inadequate socialisation and the over generous welfare state encourages reckless behaviour that is immoral and criminal

Murray believes that:
- low IQ is associated with employment
- low IQ increases chances of someone committing crime
- single mothers hound be condemned, they raise young bos who have no male role model so are more likely to turn to crime
- girls without fathers search for a father substitute and get pregnant early in life
