6 Muscular System Flashcards
skeletal muscle
striated and voluntary, produces movement
smooth muscle
non-striated and involuntary, it lines the GI tract, respiratory tract, blood vessels, urinary tract, and reproductive organs
cardiac muscle
striated, involuntary muscle found only in the heart
peristalsis
involuntary movement of smooth muscle that moves swallowed food through the stomach and intestines
epicardium
outermost layer of the heart
myocardium
the muscular middle layer of the heart that is responsible for the heart’s pumping action
endocardium
inner lining of the heart
tendons
connect muscle to bone
origin
where a muscle begins, also the fixed part where it attaches to bone
insertion
the movable point where a muscle attaches to bone
elevation
upward movement of a limb or body part
depression
downward movement of a limb or body part
rotation
circular movement around an axis such as the shoulder joint
circumduction
circular movement of a limb at the far end
flexion
bending a joint, decreasing the angle between bones
