6. Gene probes and Genetic counselling Flashcards
1
Q
define DNA probes
A
single stranded pieces of DNA which are complimentary to specific base sequences
2
Q
how can DNA probes be used
A
to highlight sequences on a gel i.e. fluorescent probes
3
Q
list the possible uses of DNA probes
A
- locate specific alleles of a gene
- see if a person is carrying the disease
- helps determine how patients will respond to drugs
- helps identify health risks
4
Q
outline the method of using a DNA probe
A
- restriction endonucleases digest the DNA sequence and is separated via gel electrophoresis
- DNA is incubated with a DNA probe
- if the complimentary DNA sequence is present the probe will join the specific base
- it is then put under a UV light, if the sequence is present the sample will glow
5
Q
name the possible uses of this technology
A
- genetic counselling
- personalised medicine
