6. Fallopian tubes Flashcards
1
Q
Diseases of the Fallopian tubes
A
- Infections/inflammatory conditions
- Suppurative salpingitis
- Tuberculous salpingitis
- Actinomycosis (IUCD) - Ectopic pregnancy
- Endometriosis → Salpingitis isthmica nodosa (Fallopian tubes)
- Cysts
- Paratubal cysts
- Hydatids of Morgagni - Neoplasm
a. Benign
- Adenomatoid tumours
b. Malignant
- Adenocarcinoma
2
Q
Common pathogens that result in suppurative salpingitis
A
- Chlamydia trachomatis
2. Neisseria gonorrhoeae
3
Q
Definition of hydatids of Morgagni
A
Small cysts lined by tubal-type epithelium, presumed to arise in remnants of the Mullerian duct
4
Q
Hydrosalpinx
A
- A hydrosalpinx is a blocked fallopian tube that is filled with fluid
- Tubal blockage is usually a result of previous pelvic infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease but can also be caused by endometriosis
5
Q
Pyosalpinx
A
- Caused by Chlamydia, Neisseria gonorrhoea, E. coli, Staphylococci, Streptococci
- Pelvic pain
- Antibiotics / surgery
- Infertility
6
Q
Actinomycotic salpingitis
A
- A filamentous branched clubbed organism, gram-positive, non-acid fast
- Increased incidence in IUCD users (up to 36% of cases)
- Treated with antibiotics
7
Q
Adenomatoid tumour
A
- Most common benign tumour of the fallopian tube
- Usually asymptomatic
- Invagination of visceral mesothelium
- Tubular spaces of varying sizes composed of flattened cells
8
Q
Salpingitis isthmica nodosa
A
- Uncertain pathogenesis in young women
- Infertility or ectopic pregnancy
- Bilateral in 80% of cases with nodular swelling
- Diverticulae that communicates with lumen cause swellings
