What is the Establishment position of cognition?
Fodor. representing external entities or processes by mental tokens/symbols.
Cognition- perception, awareness, any apprehension of world
What supports Fodors view of cognition?
Computers-> computational model.
How does Fodor believe representations come to represent external lthings?
through linguistic codes. Adds to syntactic model of Chomsky. Language of thught. Pre-existing links in causal chain= the mentalese stock of basic concepts
How does representationism lead to solipsism?
Because then we only know what is inside our minds-> how can we know anything?
How does Fodor justify the issue of how to know whether representations are correct?
because mental mechanisms are causal (exemplified in computers) cog psych studies causal links between things and mental processes
What is Mentalese? Why does Maze oppose it/what fallacy is committed?
Innate stock of concepts.
At some point we must have direct access to the real to establish meaning. Fallacy of petition principia (assuming as a premise a statement which has same meaning as conclusion)
What is cognition according to Maze/Realism?
Cognition is a relation (causal). Person (brain, CNS) & situation (state of affairs). Examining terms/nature of relations to understand cognition
