6. calculating reaction rates Flashcards
what is the reaction rate
the rate at which the product is formed or a reactant is used up
equation for reaction rate
reaction rate = amount of reactant used or product formed / time
how to measure how quickly a gas product forms using change in mass
3 steps
- use mass balance to measure mass disappearing from container.
- when reaction starts, start a stop clock and take measurements as regular time intervals (recording mass and time)
- when mass stops decreasing reaction finished
how to measure how quickly a gaseous product forms using volume of gas given off
- use gas syringe to measure volume of product
- when reaction starts, start a stop clock and take measurements as regular time intervals (recording mass and time)

positives and negatives to measuring how quickly a gaseous product forms using change in mass
+ very accurate
easy to use
- releases gas into room. dangerous if gas is toxic or flammable.
+ and - measuring how quickly a gaseous product forms using volume of gas given off
+accurate
- vigorous reactions can blow plunger off
how to calculate a gradient
change in y / change in x
you can work out reaction rate from ____ of a graph
gradient
