What is a cadence?
A two chord formula that marks the end of every phrase of classical music, thereby providing a type of musical punctuation.
What is the set up of a Keyboard Style cadence?
The root of each chord is in the bass clef, and the three notes of the triad are in close position in the treble clef, in any one of the three positions depending on which note is in the melody.
What are the two types of “final” cadences found at the end of a piece of music?
Perfect Cadence
Plagal Cadence
What is another name for Perfect Cadence?
Authentic Cadence
What does a Perfect Cadence consist of?
The dominant chord followed by the tonic chord V-I
What minor scale is used for Cadences?
The harmonic minor scale.
When an harmonic minor scale is used for a Cadence what has to happen to the leading note and the dominant triad?
The leading notes must be raised.
Dominant Trial must be major in quality.
What does a Plagal Cadence consist of?
The subdominant chord followed by the tonic chord IV-I
Where is a Plagal Cadence often found?
At the end of a piece of music after a Perfect Cadence.
What is an Imperfect Cadence?
A non-final cadence that occurs in the middle of a composition.
What is the second chord of an Imperfect Cadence?
Always the dominant chord (V).
What is the first chord of an Imperfect Cadence?
The firs chord can be one of many. Beginning ones are Tonic and Subdominant.
