6-Acids,Bases+Salts Flashcards
How do you make salts from metal?
Metal+Acid—>Salt+Hydrogen
What are the 4 state symbols?
(s) -Solid
(l) -Liquid
(aq) -Aqueous
(g) -Gas
What are bases?
Oxides and hydroxides of metals, soluble ones are alkalis.
How do you make a soluble salt from an insoluble base?
Acid+Base—>Salt+Water
How do you make a salt from a soluble base?
Acid+Alkali—>Salt+Water
How do you solidify a salt from a salt solution?
By evaporating the water.
What ions make solutions acidic?
H+ ions.
What ions make solutions alkali?
OH- ions.
What can you use to remove unwanted ions from a solution?
Precipitation.
What is neutralisation?
When acids and alkalis cancel each other out. The H+ and OH- ions react to form water.
What is the equation for neutralisation?
H+ + OH- —> H2O
How is ammonia used?
Turned into ammonium nitrate by neutralising nitric acid and is used in fertilisers. It increases amount of hydrogen in the soil.
What is the equation for neutralising ammonia and nitric acid?
NH3 + HNO3 —> NH4NO3
What are the pros and cons of ammonium nitrate?
Pros:
*Increases crop yield
*Increases crop size
Cons:
*Can contaminate drinking water
*Can encourage algae growth in reservoirs/lakes which bacteria break down and use up all oxygen so becomes lifeless (eutrophication)
*To much nitrate in water can cause health problems
