5-Exothermic+Endothermic Reactions Flashcards
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction accompanied by a fall in temperature as heat is taken from the surroundings.thermal decomposition is an endothermic reaction.
What is an Exothermic reaction?
A reaction accompanied by a temperature rise as Exothermic reactions transfer heat to surroundings. Combustion is an example of an Exothermic reaction.
How does heat transfer work in reversible reactions?
It is always exothermic one way and endothermic the other way. With the same amount of energy being transferred either way.
Copper sulphate is an example of a reversible reaction. What happens both ways of the reaction?
(The equation is CuSO4. 5 x H2O CuSO4+5 x H2O)
Blue crystals of hydrated copper sulphate become white anhydrous copper sulphate on heating, as water is removed. If water is added again to the white anhydrous copper sulphate, blue hydrated copper sulphate is formed and heat is given out.
