6/9 - Pindexing, Working Casts and Dies, 325-340 (HEAVY EMPHASIS FOR FINAL) Flashcards
what is the system of making removable dies
pindex system
what are the parts of the pindex machine
- on-off switch
- motor housing
- work table
- handle bar
- pilot light
- light beam director
- drill hole
what part of the pindex machine moves the table up and down
handle bar (but our own system you just push the whole table down)
you should build stone ___ mm beyond the border of the tray
20 mm
how thick should hard stone base be? where should you trim to? what should the faciolingual width be?
15-18 mm; trim to depth of fold; F-L is 15-18 mm
how many pins for each die, pontic area, and any terminal segments
two
should the cast be damp or dry when drilling into hard stone
DAMP
should the cast be damp or dry when trying in and cementing the pins into the cast
DRY
should the collar of pin be flush with the base of the cast
YES
do you put short pins or long pins in first
short pins first
which pins in the lingual holes
short pins
which pins in the facial holes
long pins
once cement w/ pins has dried, what do you do next?
place sleeves over the pins with flat sides facing each other
what sleeves go on long pins
black
what sleeves go on short pins
gray
what do you place on the cast has a separating medium?
Super-Sep (preferred) but can use petrolatum (grady no like)
what should you do at the end of gray sleeves to prevent stone from getting in
put wax
after the pins are in, you should box the wax with what
red boxing wax
should you pre-mark saw cuts or just full send
pre-mark
what is the height of the pin on the pindex machine
~5 mm
what happens if pins are not totally seated?
- base can be locked in or stone fracture
- pin may dislodge
can pin be removed if not totally seated?
YES! pliers but never reuse a nicked pin
why use Super Sep instead of Vaseline
Super Sep flows easier. Vaseline clumps thus possibility of void
when measuring the cast, do you measure 15-18 mm to the cervix of the tooth or to the occlusal surface?
occlusal surface
how many mm bevel at base of cast? why?
3 mm bevel
allows for easier separation between HardRock pour and FlowStone pour
T/F: short pins are circled, long pins just have X
TRUE
what should you use to continue to drill hole if the pin doesn’t go all the way in
hand reamer
what is the name of the adhesive to put the pins in
liquid cyanoacrylate
what side of the pin goes in first? the long or short side of pin
SHORT SIDE
does the flat side of the sleeve face facial or lingual? why?
FACIAL! to give more space between the pins
do you use the whole thickness of the boxing wax or half the thickness? do you place the cut or uncut side down
half lengthwise; place uncut side down
how many grams of FlowStone
~200 g
how much FlowStone should you flow into base?
just barely covering the bottom bevel
indexes should be placed in a ___fashion
tripod
what’s the name of the band at the end of pindex lecture
The Searchers
what’s the name of the coach that said “be quick but don’t hurry”
John Wooden
what is the cast that is mounted on the articulator
working cast
what is a model of the individual prepared tooth on which the margins of the wax pattern are finished
die
what are the two systems of working casts
- separate die
- removable die (pindex)
advantages of separate dies
- no addn procedures needed to create a die other than making two casts (a full-arch and a sectional)
- keeps relationship between abutments fixed and immovable
- easier to obtain physiologically harmonious restoration contours when fabricating wax pattern
disadvantages of separate dies
transferring of wax pattern between 2 casts lead to distruction of internal aspect of wax up
T/F: a properly trimmed die means the handle with be at an angle
FALSE. will not have an angle and at 1 inch long
what can you use to trim the die
acrylic bur (pear shaped one) and can shape with scalpel
die contours should be what length
at least 4 mm
should the preparation finish line on the die be outlined?
yes with red pencil
where should you place die relief
preparation portion of the die
types of antirotational devices used for removable dies
- flat-sided single dowel
- double straight dowels w/ a common head
- two separate parallel dowels
how many mm extension of FlowStone
4 mm but actually 3 mm bc taking into account the bevel
should you be able to see the end of any of the long pins at the base of the FlowStone
YES
should you carve FlowStone until you can see the bevel
YES
how can you cut the stone
with a diamond disc or hand saw but use the diamond disc
do you put plaster on the whole blue base
nah - avoid the pins, grady did the rope wax apparatus to avoid the pins
