6-12 Bacterial Endocarditis Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of bacterial endocarditis
A
Infection of the endothelium of the heart (including but not limited to the valves)
2
Q
Definition of acute bacterial endocarditis
A
ABE
Infection of normal valves with virulent organism (S. Aureus, beta-hemolytic strep, Strep pneumo)
3
Q
Definition of subacute bacterial endocarditis
A
SBE
More indolent infection with less virulent organism (S. Viridans, enterococcus)
Often abnormal valves
4
Q
2 categories of predisposing conditions to BE
A
Abnormal valve
Risk of bacteremia
5
Q
High risk abnormal valves?
A
Prior endocarditis Rheumatic heart disease Aortic valve disease (including bicuspid) Complex cyanotic lesions Prosthesis
6
Q
Medium risk abnormal valve?
A
Mitral valve disease (including MVP with mitral regurgitation or thickened leaflet)
HCMP
7
Q
What puts patients at risk of bacteremia?
A
IVDU Indwelling venous catheters Poor dentition Hemodialysis DM Prosthetic material in heart (pacemaker, ICD, graft)
