Q

What are the three dimensions of Islam in Arabic? What do they mean? Where are they located in the human? What is the name of the science related to each dimension? What happens if we neglect each of the dimensions?

A
  1. Islam. Goodness. Actions of the Body. Fiqh (Islamic Law). If we neglect, we can’t prove our submission to God, and we submit to our ego instead of to Allah. 2. Iman. Truth. Beliefs of the Mind. Aqidah (theology). If we neglect, it becomes a culture instead of a religion. 3. Ihsan. Beauty. Character of the Heart/Soul. Tazkiya/Tasawwuf (virtue). If we neglect, religion becomes dry, rigid, and just a bunch of rules.

What are the correct and incorrect responses when we do something good or bad?

A

When we do something good, we give credit to God. The incorrect response is to give credit to one self and become arrogant. When we do something bad, we blame ourselves. The incorrect response is to blame God or others. Nawawi #24 (final phrase) فَمَنْ وَجَدَ خَيْرًا فَلْيَحْمَدْ اللَّهَ، وَمَنْ وَجَدَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ فَلَا يَلُومَن إلَّا نَفْسَهُ “So he who finds good let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that let him blame no one but himself.”

What are the six things that occur when one becomes a Wali (friend of Allah)?

A

Nawawi #38 When I Love him, I am: (1) his hearing with which he hears, and (2) his sight with which he sees, and (3) his hand with which he grasp, and (4) his foot with which he walks. (5) Were he to ask of Me, I would surely give him; and (6) were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge.

49

51
Q

Imam Al-Nawawi has 42 hadith in his book of 40 hadith. What is the 42nd hadith about? Why do you think Imam Al-Nawawi may have chosen this as the final hadith?

A

Nawawi #42 This hadith is about how forgiving Allah is! As long as we ask Allah he will forgive us, and won’t even mind! Even if our sins reach the clouds or are nearly as great as the earth, He will still forgive us! This might have been chosen as the final hadith to leave us with hope, and protect us from despair (which is Satan’s weapon).

A

(24). Your Lord has commanded that you should worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say no word that shows impatience with them, and do not be harsh with them, but speak to them respectfully (23) and lower your wing in humility towards them in kindness and say, ‘Lord, have mercy on them, just as they cared for me when I was little.’ (24)
