5A Photosynthesis, Respiration and ATP Flashcards
Photosynthesis Equation
6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Define metabolic processes
a series of small reactions controlled by enzymes eg photosynthesis and respiration
Define phosphorylation
adding phosphate to a molecule eg ADP is phosphorylation to ATP
Define photophosphorylation
adding phosphate to a molecule using light
define photolysis
the splitting of a molecule using light energy
define photoionisation
when light energy excites electrons in an atom or molecule, giving them more energy causing them to be released. The release of the electrons causes the atom or molecule to become a positively charged ion
define hydrolysis
the splitting of a molecule using water
Define varboxylation
the removal of carbon dioxide from a molecule
Define dehydrogenation
the removal of hydrogen from a molecule
Define redox reactions
reactions that involve reduction and oxidation
Reduction is gain of electrons
Oxidation is loss of electrons
Define coenzyme
a molecule that aids the function of an enzyme
How do coenzymes work
they transfer a chemical group from one molecule to another
Examples of coenzymes used in photosynthesis are
NADP, it transfers hydrogen from one molecule to another. It can reduce or oxidise a molecule.
