5.7 Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
What are intermolecular forces?
relatively weak interactions that take place between neutral molecules
What are ion-dipole forces?
attraction between polar molecules and ions
What are dipole-dipole forces?
attractions between positive end of one polar molecule and the negative end of another polar molecule
What is a dipole-induced dipole force?
permanent dipole in one molecule may induce a dipole in a neighboring nonpolar molecule
What are london dispersion forces?
very weak and transient interactions between instantaneous dipoles of nonpolar molecules
What is the strongest type of intermolecular between neutral atoms?
hydrogen bonds
What are the two specific criteria for hydrogen bonding?
- molecule must have a covalent bond between H and either O, N, or F
- another molecule must have a long pair of electrons on an O, N, or F
What is vapor pressure?
pressure exerted by the gaseous phase of a liquid that evaporated from the exposed surface of the liquid
