5.6 Lab Flashcards
Salmonella pathogenesis:
-eat/ drink from contaminated source
-bacteria travel to stomach where most are killed by acid, but some survive and travel through intestine
-salmonella uses flagellum to swim towards surface of intestinal epithelial cells
-several factors on salmonella surfacxe help the bacteria attach to the epithelial cells
-starts to invade into interior of cells with type 3 secretion system, which delivers toxins into host cells
-toxins manipulate function of cellular lipids and proteins, inducing changes in the host cytoskeleton, leading to the engulfment of the bacterium
-salmonella is now inside a vacuole in the cell, and it injects a different set of effectors into the cell which allow the bacteria to be safe within the vacuole and give it space to replicate
-infection in the gut triggers a profound inflammatory response, lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea
salmonella dublin leads to what in cattle
wide range of clinical signs:
-diarrhea
-joint infections
-pneumonia
-abortion
-sudden death from septicemia
-gangrene
>typical salmonella infections appear as GI, however S. dublin most often presents as a resp illness
how does infection with salmonella dublin in cattle often differ from other types of salmonella infections
typical salmonella infections appear as GI issues; however, S. Dublin most often presents as respiratory illness
should we treat an asymptomatic carrier of salmonella?
no
why might we see symptoms of salmonellosis in a dog, even though this is very uncommon?
-if dog has dysbiosis of gut microbiome, eg. due to a course of antibiotics, we salmonella may cause issues
