5.5 Metal Cations and Non-metal Anions Combine to Form Ionic Compounds Flashcards

1
Q

Ionic Bonds

A

Positive cations are attracted to negative anions to form ionic compounds. This balances the charges of the ions.

Q

Metallic Elements Ionic Bonding

A

Typically found on the left side of the periodic table, with fewer than four electrons in their valence shells. They tend to lose electrons and form cations.

Nonmetals

A

Gain electron to form anions, achieving full valence shells

Ionic Compound Properties

A

Compounds that are held together by ionic bonding are called ionic compounds. As they form, the like charged ions repel each other and the oppositely charged ions attract each other. Settle into alternating positions as it is most stable. Energy is required to move ions out of their positions
- Hard and brittle
- High melting point
- Formed by strong electrostatic forces between cations and anions

Q

Polyatomic Ions

A

Ions made of two or more atoms with a charge. Example: Hydroxide (OH-) has one oxygen and one hydrogen atom with a charge of -1.
