  • identity is fluid
  • when ppl speak & write, they: demonstrate who they are + their r/s to others + enacting their identities
  • we dont change our fundamental character, we change the way we use lang to: represent the identity we wish to project + address a particular person or social grp + address situations in a particular content, situation, or culture

  1. functional & formal grammar
    • functional: word classes & established structures
    • systemic functional grammar (SFG): ideational, interpersonal, & textual meaning
  2. style & register as representation
    • style: recognisable linguistic & discoursal patterns in a text + how writers & speakers use resources of lang variation to make meaning in social encounters
    • register: a particular variety of lang as defined according to the way its used in social situations & diff contexts
  3. intertextuality & ideology
    • intertextuality: the r/s texts create w other texts
    • intertextuality “may be done by obvious quotation, parody, or borrowing a textual feature readily associated w another text” (Mooney & Evans, 2015)
