how is identity tied in with discourse?
A
- identity is fluid
- when ppl speak & write, they: demonstrate who they are + their r/s to others + enacting their identities
- we dont change our fundamental character, we change the way we use lang to: represent the identity we wish to project + address a particular person or social grp + address situations in a particular content, situation, or culture

- register: a particular variety of lang as defined according to the way its used in social situations & diff contexts
