5.4 - Crossing Boundaries Flashcards
Pope and Keith-Spiegel (2008) discussed grounding boundary decisions in an ethical framework:
They suggest a nine step process when considering whether a specific boundary crossing may be harmless and potentially helpful (supportive of the client and the therapy) or harmful (disruptive for the client and the therapy).
Two ethical raps that apply to the therapist factors when making a decision about boundary crossing:
- Common sense, objectivity trap
- Values trap
Commonsense, objectivity trap
a belief that commonsense, objective solutions to professional ethical dilemmas are easy
Values trap
personal values (morals, religion) in conflict with requirements specified by professional code
Ethical awareness is a continuous, active process that involves
constant questioning and personal responsibility
