5.2 - Multiple Relationships Flashcards
A dual relationship occurs when:
The psychologist engages in another significant, meaningful relationship with the client in addition to the professional relationship.
The second relationship may occur
Simultaneously with or after the termination of the professional relationship
The term ‘relationship’ is confused with the concepts of:
- Incidental / accidental contacts
- Boundary crossings
Multiple relationships become behaviours within multiple relationships only if:
The professional were to assume another role in another relationship with the client.
Example of incidental or accidental contacts are
unintended or brief interactions with a client outside of the therapy context
An example of a boundary crossing is:
benign, constructive interactions with a client that cross the traditional external boundaries that frame the therapeutic relationship; e.g. crying in front of a client, attending a client’s special event, disclosing a personal stressor to a client
