5.33 - Doing titrations Flashcards
What is a titration?
A practical method with the aim of measuring the volumes of the two reacting, and using these values to calculate the unknown concentration of one of the reactants
What equipment would you need for a titration?
- Burette
- Pipette
- Clamp
- Clamp Stand
- Beaker
- White Tile
- Reactants
What must you do with a burette before starting a titration?
Fill the gap between the tip and the tap
What is the meniscus? Where should you read from?
The meniscus is the U-shape in the burette. You should always read from the bottom of the meniscus, at eye-level
What are concordant titres?
Titres that are within 0.20cm3 of each other
What colour is methyl orange in an acid and in an alkali?
Red in acid, yellow in alkali
What colour is phenolphthalein in an acid and in an alkali?
Colourless in acid, pink in alkali
What combination of acid and base must be used with methyl orange?
A strong acid and a weak base, or a strong acid and a strong base
What combination of acid and base must be used with phenolphthalein?
A weak acid and a strong base, or a strong acid and a strong base
What are examples of strong acids?
Hydrochloric acid and nitric acid
What are examples of strong bases?
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide
What is the most common weak base?
Ammonia
What is the most common weak acid?
Ethanoic Acid
