5.22 - Writing chemical equations Flashcards
What are the 4 state symbols, and what do they mean?
(s) = Solid
(l) = Liquid
(g) = Gas
(aq) = Aqueous
What does it mean if an equation is balanced?
There are the same amount of each atom on each side of the equation
How would you balance the following equation?
C4H10 + O2 -> CO2 + H2O
- Add 6.5 in front of the O2
- Add 4 in front of the CO2
- Add 5 in front of the H2O
What are these numbers that go in front of the compounds known as?
Coefficients
What does a conventional arrow look like?
->
What symbol is used in a reversible reaction equation, instead of the conventional arrow?
↔
What is an ionic equation?
A type of equation that shows how ions change in a reaction
What are the ions that don’t change in a reaction called? Are these included in ionic equations?
Spectator ions, they aren’t included in ionic equations
What are ionic half-equations?
Equations that show either oxidation or reduction in a reaction. They occur in electrolysis most of the time
