5.3 Atomic Structure Flashcards
Electrostatics
Physics that deal with phenomena due to attractions or repulsions of electric charges but not dependent upon their motion
Atomic Number
(Z) is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass Number
(A) the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Atomic Mass
The weighted average of the masses of the naturally occurring isotopes of an element
Atomic Mass Unit (amu)
Used to express atomic and molecular masses, it is the approximate mass of a hydrogen atom, a proton, or a neutron, and is one-twelfth of the mass of an unbound carbon-12 atom at rest. It is equivalent to the dalton.
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element that have the same numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
Neutron
A subatomic nuclear particle with no charge
Strong nuclear force
The strong interaction that is responsible for binding the protons and neutrons in the atomic nuclei together
