5.2.3 Redox Flashcards
1
Q
What is oxidation?
A
- the loss of electrons
2
Q
What is reduction?
A
- the gain of electrons
3
Q
What blocks undergo reduction and oxidation?
A
- s, d and some p block elements undergo oxidation
- most p block elements undergo reduction
4
Q
What happens in the titration between iron and manganate?
A
- iron ions are oxidised while manganate ions are reduced
- the end is when the manganate is a pale pink (at this point there is an excess of manganate ions)
5
Q
What is the overall reaction for a manganate titration?
A
MnO4- +8H+ + 5Fe2+ -> Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ +4H2O
6
Q
What happens in the titration between iodine and thiosulphate?
A
- thiosulphate ions are oxidised and iodine is reduced
- it is a clock reaction so the end point goes from blue-black to colourless (adding starch part way)
7
Q
What is the overall reaction for thiosulphate titrations?
A
2S2O32- + I2 -> S4O62- + 2I-
8
Q
What is the equation for chromium?
A
Cr2O72- +14H+ + 6e- —> 2Cr3+ + 7H2O
