5.2 Circular Motion Flashcards
What the radian
The angle subtended by a circular arc with a length equal to the radius of the circle
How do you convert from degrees to radians
Times by pi/180
Define angular velocity
Rate of change of angle
Define the time period
Time taken for one complete oscillation
Which direction does the centripetal force act
Perpendicular to the velocity
How is an object accelerating if travelling at constant speed
If the object is travelling in circular motion the direction is always changing hence always accelerating even though speed is constant
Define the centripetal force
The force acting perpendicular to the velocity of an object and towards the centre of the circle
Describe an experiment to investigate circular motion
-Use a string with 2 bung at either side which has been passed through a glass tube
-Spin the bung at the top
-If the centripetal force is greater than the weight of the bung, the bung will move up
-Use a paper clip for clear indication
