5.1.2 Population Studies Flashcards
What is the definition of human population?
collection of people in a defined geographical area and the number of people in that area
What is population growth rate?
rate of population change in a specified time period, reported as a percent of the initial population
What is the definition of overpopulation?
a point at which there are more people than can be sustained
What is carrying capacity?
the total possible population that can be sustained with relevant resources and without significant effects in a given area
What are population projections?
estimates of future populations made from mathematical extrapolations of previous data
What are population pyramids?
graphical illustrations that represent population distributions
What is the crude birth rate?
annual number of births per 1,000 people in a population
What is the crude death rate?
annual number of deaths per 1,000 people in a population
What is the rate of population change?
difference between the crude birth rate and the crude death rate
What is the definition of fertility?
ability of a woman to reproduce
What is the general fertility rate?
annual number of births per 1,000 women in a population
What is the total fertility rate?
predicts the total number of births per single woman in a populations with the assumption the woman experiences the current recorded age-specific fertility rates and reaches the end of her reproductive life
What is the replacement fertility rate?
fertility rate at which the population will remain balanced
What is the sub-replacement fertility rate?
indicates that the birth rate is less than the death rate and the population size will not be sustained
What is the population-lag effect?
refers to the fact that changes in total fertility rates are often not reflected in the birth rate for several generations
