5.1.2 Plant Organ System: Shoot and Root System Flashcards
What does the shoot system consist of?
Stem, leaves, and the reprod parts of the plants (flowers and fruits)
Functions of the root
- Anchoring the plant and obsorbing water and minerals (upward).
- Storage of the products for photosynthesis.
What are tap root systems?
Has a main root that grows down vertically
What are fiborous root systems?
Located closer to the surface and has a denser network of roots
What are stems?
Provides support to the plant, holding leaves, flowers, and buds
What are leaves?
Site of photosynthesis
Different types of stems?
- Branched
- Woody
- Herbaceous
- Unbranched
What are nodes?
The stem that is attatched to the leaves
What are internodes?
Regions in between 2 succeeding nodes
What does the tip of the shoot contain?
The apical meristem within the apical bud
Function of Axillary bud?
Gives rise to a branch or flower
What is a lamina?
Broad expanded blade
Leaves are attatched to what?
Petiole
What is a margin?
Edge of the leaf
What is a tip?
Tip of the leaf
What is a midrib?
Thick large single vein along the center of a leaf
What is a vein?
It carries food or water throughout the leaf
