5.12 Electrostatic Sensitive Devices Flashcards
Static electricity can be generated by either?
Friction or induction
Dangerous situations that generate static charge are?
Low Relative Humidity of air 10-20%
What would happen to a MOSFET if an ESD is felt at the gate?
Arc through the silicon dioxide insulating layer and either destroy or severely degrade the operation
What classification system is used to define component sensitivity?
Human Body Model HMB
How many classes of ESD are there?
3
What is the range of Class 1 ESD?
Extremely Sensitive 0 - 2 kV
What is the range of Class 2 ESD?
Sensitive Range from 2 to 4 kV
What is the range of class 3 ESD?
Less Sensitive Range 4 to 16kV
What are the 2 types of static damage?
Catasrophic failures (Direct and Latent), or Upset failures (gate leakage)
Describe direct catastrophic failure.
Permanently damaged causing the device to fail, easiest type of ESD to find. usually detected during testing.
Describe Latent failures of ESD.
ESD weakens or degrades the component to a point where it will still function properly during testing, but over time degrades.
Describe Upset Failure.
Causes gate leakage at transistors resulting in loss of software or incorrect storage of information.
What are these signs?
ESD Sensitive
Which is best used to package class 3 ESD components?
Pink Poly Bags
What is best used to package Class 1 ESD Components?
Transparent metallized static shield bags
