5.1.1: Temperature Flashcards
Temperature
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a system.
Thermal equilibrium
A state in which two or more regions have the same temperature such that no heating occurs
A state in which there is no net flow of thermal energy between two systems is considered to be in ‘thermal equilibrium’.
Triple point
A specific temperature and pressure where all three phases of a substance can exist in thermal equilibrium
Triple point of water
0.01°C and 0.61KPa
Absolute temperature scale
Degrees Kelvin, does not depend on the property of any substance like Celsius does for water
Absolute zero and the triple point of water are the two fixed points used to determine the absolute temperature scale
