5.1 study guide Flashcards
What’s an enzyme?
Protein’s that help speed up chemical reactions
What’s a substrate?
The surface on which an organism lives
What’s Activation energy?
The amount of energy is used for the reaction to occur
How does the structure of an enzyme relate to how well the function catalyses chemical reactions?
The shape of the enzyme fits exactly with the shape of the substrate< If the active site changes, then it won’t fit.
How can enzymes be turned “ON”?
Activators/cofactors
How can enzymes be turned “OFF”?
Inhibitors reduce enzyme activity
What is enzyme concentration in reaction rate?
More enzymes per volume, more product successful collisons
What is temperature in reaction rate?
Hot molecules move fast and lots of collisons, cold molecules move fast and not a lot of collisons.
How do you name conventions?
Most enzymes named for the reaction they catalyze and most end in -ase.
How do you know which substrates go with which enzyme?
The shape fits each enzyme perfectly.
